The Megan dress is my very own wedding dress! My friends and family would often asked me if I would design my own wedding gown, so it was an amazing accomplishment to be able to create my own dress.
I always knew I wanted to look like a princess on my wedding day... So that called for a sparkly ballgown dress! I began my design process by sketching different designs. Once I decided on the perfect design, I started looking for fabrics. I found most of my fabrics locally at a shop called, Tissú Fine Fabrics. Now was the time to find the right lace.
I began my search for the perfect beaded lace online. After choosing between several different gorgeous fabrics, I found the perfect lace. When it arrived a few days later (thank heavens for quick shipping. I was dying to see my fabrics LOL) I opened up my package. The lace was so beautiful! And sooooo sparkly!!! I was very excited to get started sewing.
Before sewing with my fabrics, I started with the muslin mock up. This is when you create the dress in an inexpensive cotton fabric before moving on to your final fabrics. This way I was able to make sure the pattern I had created for myself fit correctly and I could make any small alterations before I started sewing on my real dress fabrics.
After I made the proper alterations I started the understructure for my dress.... the outer layer… MANY layers of tulle... and began sewing the lace appliqué on the bodice.
The lace application was probably the longest part of the dress making process because I wanted it to be perfect and I was being very picky. At this point I got scared and started doubting myself. I even went back to the drawing board for a moment to think up what I needed to change to make me like the dress again. I even tried designing a new dress. I ordered new fabric and began on a new dress. But by doing this I realized I was on the right track with my original design. I just needed to continue forward.
Once my lace was completely sewn on and beads were fixed... I loved my dress again. Now I just added my sleeves, finishing touches... and VOILÀ!
My gown was ready!
Creating my own wedding gown was the perfect way to kick start my business.
Shortly after my wedding, I began working to start MeganEmily Couture and to design new original dresses. And here I am!
I am amazed at all the support and love I have received as I have continued my design journey! 💖
